Snack Time: Homemade Trail Mix
One of the most classic and iconic snack foods I can think of is trail mix. And now that summer is coming and hiking season and being outside all the time is coming back to be the norm, it's time for the warm weather snacks to come back. I am always a big fan of finding a way to add more protein in my diet, because my main allergies are protein sources, and combining different protein sources all in one is definitely a plus. I created this recipe because I have a hard time finding packaged trail mixes minus nuts and allergens, and it's also a lot cheaper to create my own. For this recipe, you'll need:
- Sesame sticks (variety of kinds)
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sunflower seeds
- Dried cranberries
- Dark chocolate chips
1. Add the ingredients into a large jar in layers.
2. Shake the jar up every so often to evenly distribute the ingredients.
And that's it. So simple! I also top up the jar as I snack, and make sure to mix the jar up before taking a handful, because the seeds tend to fall to the bottom.
I love the mixture of sweet and salty, and the cranberries cut through all the dry ingredients to enhance the flavour. Plus, adding chocolate to anything makes it a hit.
