For the last few days, I was on vacation visiting my grandparents on Pender Island, B.C. This beautiful island has been my second home all my life, and there is nothing quite like going back every year to a quiet place that, for the most part, stays the same with a very rural, relaxed way of living. The Cafe at Hope Bay has always been a popular restaurant on the island, and after picking me and my boyfriend up from the ferry, my grandparents took us to lunch at the adorable little building (right on the waterfront of course).

Of the things I love about Pender, the top of the list would have to be how friendly everyone is. Chances are, friends will end up meeting other friends and family without realizing and conversations will carry through the restaurant easily. The servers, who are all around front of house employees, are so warm and friendly as you would expect from a small town. The inside of the restaurant is so bright and cheery with a view of the ocean and the other islands surrounding Pender.

And the menu was fantastic! It is very rare that I have a choice between items on the menu, but there were a handful of options I got to consider. Since I was quite hungry after the few hours of travelling, I settled on a chicken burger and had no problem substituting mustard and ketchup on the bun instead of the house burger sauce.

Despite the fact that this meal was very simple, it was amazing! The chicken was cooked so well, it was juicy and tender and full of flavour. And the french fries, oh my goodness. I love the crisp to almost burnt fries that could not be any more crunchy if they were left out to dry in the sun for a week. These definitely held up to my standards  as every single fry was crispy and crunchy. This enormous plate cost $10.95. Now that is a bargain.

I definitely recommend not just The Cafe at Hope Bay but all of Pender Island, it is a fantastic summer destination great for relaxing and spending some time in good company.

What are your favourite summer vacation spots? Would you rather stay with family or go to new places?
